Grider struggles on Day 2 at state golf

Ethan Grider couldn’t duplicate the success he had the first day at the Class 5A state golf tournament at Saddle Rock Golf Club in Aurora.

After ending Day 1 in fifth place, Grider shot a 13-over-par 85, which left him tied for 31st place.

“Ethan never seemed to get into a comfort zone,” Fruita Monument coach Dave Fox said. “In golf sometimes you can’t tell from one day to the next, but he battled and played well.”

Fox said Grider ran into trouble off the first tee and was able to get back to 2-over-par but had a double bogey on both the seventh and ninth holes.

“It’s that love-hate relationship we all have with golf,” Fox said. “Yesterday he loved it and today he probably he hated it, but he’s a great kid and has been great for our program.”

Grand Junction’s Mark Stern also had a tough second day, shooting an 86 and finished tied for 52nd place.

Montrose’s Drew Trujillo, who led by two shots after the first day, finished in second place.

Wyndham Clark of Valor Christian shot a 5-under-par 67 at Highlands Ranch Golf Course in Littleton on Tuesday to overtake Trujillo and win the title.

Trujillo shot a 72 on Tuesday to finish at 138, two strokes off the pace.

Valor Christian, with two players in the top three, won the team title by six shots over Rock Canyon. Montrose placed third at 448, 21 shots behind Valor Christian.

Ridgway’s Nick Purvis was the only Western Slope golfer to finish in the top 20.

Purvis, who had an 83 on Tuesday at Cougar Canyon Golf Course in Trinidad, finished at 169, tied for 14th place. Kolton Kyne of Ridgway shot a 175.

Aspen had the best team finish from the Western Slope, placing sixth at 534.

Grand Junction broke a two-game losing streak with a 10-3 victory over Montrose at Kron- kright Complex.

The Tigers (10-5, 2-4 SWL) scored six runs in the second inning to pull away.

Cierra Cosslett pitched the victory.

In Gypsum, Shelby Hanson gave up only two hits as Palisade shut out Eagle Valley 19-0.

The Bulldogs (12-5-1, 3-2 Western Slope League) had five extra-base hits.
