Growing Caprock will build on new site

Caprock Academy will break ground today on a new, more permanent site about a half-mile north of its current location.

Since opening in 2007 with about 200 students, the charter school has more than doubled enrollment, added three grade levels and outgrown the modular units that house all classes.

The school, which adds a grade level each year, will graduate its first senior class in 2013 and is adding new sections to accommodate growth in its younger grade levels.

At full capacity, Caprock Headmaster Kristin Trezise expects the school to have 600 to 800 students.

“We knew it wasn’t big enough for the final plan,” Trezise said of the school’s location.

Construction of a building with three science labs, two art rooms, offices, a full-size gymnasium and two music rooms will begin soon after today’s ground-breaking ceremony at the new site at 714 24 1/2 Road.

The building will cost $6.5 million to $7 million to build and will be funded with public bonds paid off by school savings and donations.

It’s estimated construction will be completed in August, Trezise said.

The modular units will be moved from the old site to the new site during summer break and will be used for grade-level classes until a second building is built with classrooms, a kitchen and locker rooms.

It will be at least another five years until the second building is constructed, Trezise said.

The school owns seven acres for buildings at 714 24 1/2 Road and hopes to eventually buy another 11 acres at the site.

Caprock is leasing the extra 11 acres for overflow parking and outdoor physical-education activities but may eventually turn the land into athletic fields, Trezise said.
