Health foundation donates dough for breakfast expansion

Nearly 60 percent of the students at Chipeta Elementary School enjoy breakfast in the school’s cafeteria.

The Rocky Mountain Health Plans Foundation gave $1,000 to Mesa County School District 51’s breakfast program Monday, in the hopes the program will see future expansion.

The money was allocated to the four schools with the highest number of students participating in the program.

Chipeta Elementary School received $400 and has the highest breakfast participation rate in the district. Representatives from the foundation presented an oversized check to Principal Pat Buckley.

Breakfast, Buckley said, was a key factor in keeping students alert and learning in class.

The foundation also awarded Nisley Elementary with $300, Dual Immersion Academy with $200, and $100 was given to Clifton Elementary School.

The money will be used to expand the school lunch program, especially to those students who currently receive free or reduced lunches, so that all elementary school students can have the healthy breakfast that they may not be receiving at home, said Dan Sharp, director of nutrition services for the district.

The district recently partnered with Hunger Free Colorado to expand the program. The organization believes that schools must pioneer the effort to prevent hunger in children.
