Health care in the dock

The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday it will take up the constitutionality of the Patient Accountability and Affordable Care Act, known as Obamacare, early next year.

That’s good news, both for the future of the controversial legislation, and for our body politic. By taking up the case early next year, the court is committing to a decision by next June. That means Americans will know the status of the law when they vote in next year’s presidential and congressional elections.

More importantly, Americans will also learn whether the law’s individual mandate requiring people to obtain health insurance is constitutional. Either way, the issue must be decided so we can determine what to do next on health care.

It’s welcome news the high court will take up the case so soon.
