High school ‘Revolution’ group on mission to love
The Revolution Group at Central High School is on a mission “to love one person at a time through random acts of kindness.”
They spread the love through the high school Tuesday morning with a special presentation about local nonprofit Light Gives Heat, which helps women in Uganda through the sale of handmade necklaces.
“It is not a coincidence that you are here,” said teacher Brad Thomas as he addressed the over 500 Central high school students in the auditorium. He asked the students to ask themselves what their purpose in life was.
Thomas, who sponsors the Revolution Group at the school, said that each person has a dream and the ability to fulfill it. He used the story of Dave and Morgan Hanslow to illustrate that point. The Hanslow’s are graduates of Fruita Monument High School and founders of the Light Gives Heat organization. They are making a difference, Thomas said.
Revolution Group co-leaders Nikka Wolf and Lauren Karp were recently awarded a first place $1.200 grant from Carville’s Auto Mart to support the mission of their group. They chose to use part of the proceeds to support Light Gives Heat because the Hanslow’s are shining examples of what students can achieve.
“They exemplify the idea that any dream can be followed,” said Thomas, “My overall vision is all about chasing your dream with a passion through desire, determination and discipline.”
The student watched a portion of the new documentary, “Moving On,” which follows the intertwined lives of the Hanslow’s and the women they help in Jinji, Uganda.
Afterward Wolf interviewed the Hanslow’s about their experience. Wolf said they were an inspiration and is considering volunteering for an internship with the organization after graduation. She hoped others would be inspired by the presentation as well.
