The Dragon Unchained Renaissance and Pirate Fantasy Faire at 312 29 Road started its first weekend on April 12 and will continue on April 19.

Hear ye’ hear ye’!

Imagine a medieval village bustling with knights, gypsies, witches and drunken pirates. Blacksmiths are pounding iron, knights are testing their armor and gypsies are walking their goats through the streets. There are archers refining their skills while a comedian attracts the village children.

This 18th century village came to life on Friday at the Dragon Unchained Renaissance and Pirate Fantasy Faire. It will continue from April 19-21 at 312 29 Road by the Colorado River, and welcomes all people, be ye noble or pirate, dragon or fairy, soldier or saint to the port village of Drakestown.

“This whole thing is wonderful because it allows us to be what we all are, just big kids at heart,” said John Harvey, event organizer. “It shows our kids that history can be real and alive and it teaches everyone to embrace their heritage, all while having a great time with the family.”

Entrance is free and vendors will be selling food, drinks and souvenirs. Booths also include archery, hatchet throwing and games for younger children.

One of the main events features a gun show complete with two cannons and a watermelon-launching trebuchet, which is similar to a catapult. The gun show also includes a candy cannon.

The event is sponsored by the Thunder Mountain Colorado Living History, a non-profit organization dedicated to the re-creation of historical and cultural events.

“It’s so cool to have the support from Thunder Mountain, and this event also donates some of the proceeds to the Relay For Life and the Hospice in Grand Junction,” said Harvey.
