Through trials and tribulation, Israel has survived, and Jews have persevered.

The endurance of a people and their faith will be the message of retired Rabbi Lewis Bogage to area congregants for the Jewish High Holy Days.

Bogage, who comes from Denver, will speak about the “Genius of Judaism,” beginning with Rosh Hashanah at 7 tonight at Congregation Ohr Shalom, 441 Kennedy Ave.

“I will speak about the genius of Judaism and its adaptability to stay alive with the challenges of the world,” Bogage said. “Our prayers are for a peaceful resolution in the Middle East for all people. This is a message of hope for all people to listen. With the way things are in the economy, hope springs eternal.”

Rosh Hashanah, which starts at sundown, begins the 10-day celebration of the Jewish new year, a period of reflection and prayer that concludes with Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement.

Congregation Ohr Shalom has close to 100 members, Bogage said, but more are expected to attend the holiday services from outlying communities. People in Montrose, Delta and other outlying areas often travel to Grand Junction this time of year to attend Rosh Hashanah services at Ohr Shalom’s synagogue, he said.

Bogage has spoken at Congregation Ohr Shalom the past three years.
