Horizon Drive hit by another power outage

About 1,000 Xcel Energy customers and numerous traffic signals were affected by a power outage in the Horizon Drive area around 9:50 a.m. Monday.

Homes and businesses near the Grand Junction Regional Airport, H Road and Horizon Drive were affected, said Fred Eggleston, Xcel spokesman.

Power was fully restored at 11:20 a.m., Eggleston said.

Power outages are nothing new to the residents of the area, who have experienced numerous outages of late. Xcel Energy is working to upgrade transmission lines and upgrade its power network in north Grand Junction.

“We have completed the north of I-70 cable replacement,” Eggleston said. “That is all finished now.”

The electric company is replacing a feeder cable that, Eggleston said, was “direct-buried in the 1980s.”

The new cable will have almost twice the capacity as the old and is being buried in a conduit to allow easy access to the line in case of future trouble, he said.
