Hot iTunes artist slated for show at MavFest

One of the biggest names in mainstream music is coming to Grand Junction for an outdoor April show at Colorado Mesa University.

Seattle-based hip-hop artist and rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis will perform April 20 on CMU’s Delta Quad as the final event of MavFest.

The concert, funded through student fees, is free for CMU students, and a limited number of $20 tickets are available to the public from local City Market locations, TicketsWest.com, or the information desk at the University Center on campus.

“It is a big deal,” said Ariel Diamond, CMU’s student body vice president. “It’s a cool way for us to connect with the community, too.”

CMU’s student government initially booked Macklemore & Ryan Lewis last year before the release “Thrift Shop” sent the duo soaring to the top of the iTunes chart.

Diamond said those who booked Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were drawn to their music’s message of anti-drug use and anti-discrimination, which coincides with MavFest’s mission to highlight student life and cultural diversity.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is the first outdoor show for CMU in the spring, Diamond said, but it likely won’t be the last. CMU already has funds set aside for the next two years to put on similar shows.

“Students love it so much there will be at least one major concert a year,” Diamond said.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis released their album “The Heist” in August 2012, but the single “Thrift Shop” brought them into the mainstream.

The CMU show is for all ages but comes with a parental advisory because of language in Macklemore’s music.
