‘Idol’ audition winner eyes repeat in Texas

Besting a field of 120 vying for a shot at stardom,  Shea Bramer of Grand Junction won’t mess with success.

Bramer, 25, who has earned an audition before cameras in Austin, Texas, is already pondering what songs he’ll roll out at the next stage of “American Idol” auditions slated to start Aug. 11.

Bramer said he will probably use two songs well-received Saturday.

“You can’t go wrong with The Beatles and Michael Buble,” said Bramer, a musician, husband and father of two children who won the Grand Junction audition at the showroom of Ashley Furniture Homestore.

The Beatles’ “Let It Be” and Buble’s “Haven’t Met You Yet” were performed by Bramer for judges during Saturday’s competition, as well as Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.” In the final round, he turned to an ‘80s rock ballad, “Your Love” by The Outfield.

“I think some of the judges were just impressed by the fact I picked that song,” Bramer said. “There weren’t a lot of people there spanning different genres of music.”

Bramer said nerves became a factor Saturday only when the line of contestants dwindled to five, and then one.

“My heart started pounding in my chest, but once I grabbed the microphone I was completely comfortable,” he said.

A piano player for two decades, Bramer said he’s been writing songs for the past 10 years and performing for live audiences for the past six. A part-time server at Naggy McGee’s Irish Pub, Bramer said he had plans to record an album in the second week of August.

“Obviously, things are put on hold now,” he said.

Auditions on Aug. 11 will be filmed for the Fox network television show and winners will go to national auditions in San Francisco.

“I’m overwhelmed and excited for the challenges ahead,” he said. “I’m going to do the best I can and be happy to be there.”
