Illegal leaf fire spreads to six acres

A fire that got out of control Saturday burned several large cottonwood trees and threatened a home in the area of Kannah Creek Road and U.S. Highway 50, said spokesman Mike Page of the Grand Junction Fire Department.

Page said a resident of the area was burning leaves illegally in the afternoon when the fire kicked up and spread to about six acres.

Firefighters kept the blaze from a nearby home and several recreational vehicles. Flames that reached up to 30 feet burned several large cottonwood trees, Page said.

“We were fortunate that the wind was going the right way,” he said.

Firefighters from Lands End Fire Protection District and the Grand Junction Fire Department closed one lane of traffic on U.S. 50 as they battled the blaze throughout most of the day.

Page said no firefighters were injured. There was no immediate estimate of damage caused by the fire.
