Infant dies from backover injuries
An 11-month-old infant who was in critical condition at St. Mary’s Hospital after being run over in a driveway on Saturday night has died from her injuries.
Paytonn Garlick was pronounced dead Monday, according to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office. She died from head injuries. The manner of death is being ruled as an accident.
According to police, the girl’s grandfather, Anthony Woods, 50, struck the child when he was backing a vehicle out of a garage at 2799 Unaweep Ave.
Woods, who told police he had been drinking alcohol that night, was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, DUI and careless driving causing injury.
Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger, however, said he needs more time to decide whether to increase charges to vehicular homicide, given the baby’s death, or to pursue charges at all.
Woods is free on $3,000 bond.
According to an arrest affidavit, Jeremy Woods, whose relationship is not explained, told police he and Anthony Woods had had four to six beers in two to three hours while they were working on a vehicle in the garage when the incident occurred.
