Interstate 70 to close Tuesday at Silverthorne

On Tuesday, the main route from Grand Junction to Denver will be closed at Silverthorne to accommodate rock removal a few miles east in Georgetown.

The Colorado Department of Transportation is closing all day in both directions of traffic, beginning at 9 a.m. between Silverthorne and U.S. Highway 40 to allow crews to remove clusters of boulders that threaten the cross-state highway artery below.

Spring conditions that seem to stretch the usual spectrum of high-country heat and cold necessitate the closure, Don Hunt, executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation, said.

“I think we’re going to have the worst spring ever in terms of rockfall,” Hunt told the West Slope advocacy group, Club 20, on Saturday.
