Jaguars win this cat fight

Tigers fall to Rock Canyon in second round of playoffs

Montrose’s Stephanie Rowan goes up to score two of her nine points Friday night in the Indians’ 67-26 rout of Pueblo East.

The Grand Junction High School girls basketball team gave a valiant effort, but it wasn’t enough.

Rock Canyon pulled away in the final four minutes Friday night to defeat the Tigers 48-40 in the second round of the Class 5A state tournament at Rock Canyon High School in Highlands Ranch.

“Defensively, we did a nice job,” Grand Junction coach Sam Provenza said. “They average 61 points a game, and we held them to 48, but we didn’t create enough offense.”

Grand Junction trailed 36-33 with less than five minutes left, but it couldn’t catch the Jaguars.

“We missed some free throws late and had a shot roll off the rim that would’ve tied the game,” Provenza said. “Instead, they go down and score and turn it into a four-point game.”

Lexy Thorderson led Rock Canyon (18-6) with 22 points.

“They had a real talented player,” Provenza said. “She was active and strong.”

Sydni Brandon led the Tigers (19-5) with 14 points before fouling out. Sarah Wilkinson scored nine.

All of the Grand Junction players return next season.

“I’m real excited (about the future),” Provenza said. “We didn’t give any goodbye senior speeches. We talked about team goals. This is a dedicated group. They know where they could’ve been with a win.”
