JUCO teams trying to qualify in Gulf District
Three teams are battling to be the first team to qualify for the 2012 Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.
Northwest Florida plays Polk State at 8 a.m. (MDT) today to advance to the championship game at 11 a.m. against Palm Beach Community College in the Gulf District tournament in Lakeland, Fla. Palm Beach received a bye to the title game because it stayed in the winners’ bracket the longest.
Polk State, the No. 1 seed out of the Sun Coast Conference, was upended by Palm Beach in the second round but has come back through the losers’ bracket, whipping Chipola, the No. 1 seed from the Panhandle Conference, 14-0 on Sunday in an elimination game.
Northwest Florida was No. 2 in the Panhandle and beat Palm Beach 4-1 on Sunday.
The winner of today’s Gulf District title game will watch as the other nine qualifying tournaments play out over the next two weeks. JUCO begins May 26 at Suplizio Field.
The Central District is in its Super Regional round in Kansas, with four sub-regional tournaments wrapping up today. Those four winners advance to the district tournament May 12-14 in Wichita.
The two Texas qualifiers will be determined May 12-15, with the Southeastern tournament in Ozark, Ala., May 12-17. That week, the other teams around the country begin play in their region tournaments, with five district tournaments starting the week of May 17.
Defending national champion Navarro (Texas) College finished the regular season 34-19 and plays Alvin College in the first round of the Southern District tourney on May 12.
Iowa Western Community College, ranked No. 1 in the nation, wrapped up the regular season 51-4 and hosts the Region XI tournament May 11-14, with that winner advancing to the Northern District tourney.
