Judge will rule on sex charges for ex-teacher

A teenage girl at the center of sexual assault allegations against a former educator and police officer remained “very articulate” during two interviews in 2008, according to testimony on Wednesday.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Department investigator Peter Burg testified the alleged victim said she was 13 at the time she started having sex in 2003 with 67-year-old Rodney Eddy. Burg said the girl surprised her parents with the graphic terms she used when talking about what she did with Eddy.

“She said Mr. Eddy had taught her how to use those words,” Burg testified during a preliminary hearing Wednesday.

Burg said the girl stayed composed during her interviews in May and September 2008, but she was embarrassed when she saw her own nude photos, which she said were snapped by Eddy.

Eddy, a Mesa resident, former substitute teacher and Plateau Valley School District board member, is charged with 36 felonies, including sexual assault on a child, sexual exploitation of a child and obscenity.

District Judge Valerie Robison is expected to rule today if Eddy will be bound over for trial.
Eddy was arrested in December on allegations he repeatedly had sex with the girl during a five-year period, ending in May 2008. The alleged assaults started in September 2003 when the girl’s mother left for a six-week trip with Eddy’s wife. The child was left in Rodney Eddy’s care.

An arrest affidavit describes Eddy and the girl viewing pornography before performing numerous sex acts. Eddy on several occasions gave the girl muscle relaxants and whiskey to facilitate sexual intercourse, according to the affidavit.

The girl said she never was threatened if she disclosed the sex, but he told her to promise their involvement “was a secret.”

“At the time of these incidents, she thought she was in love with Mr. Eddy,” the affidavit said.

On Wednesday, Burg testified to recovering thousands of pornographic photos or videos found on four computers in Eddy’s home. Of those, 363 were believed to show girls under age 18, Burg testified.

Eddy’s alleged victim didn’t testify Wednesday.

Eddy was elected treasurer of the Plateau Valley School Board in November 2007, before resigning last summer, according to the affidavit.

Eddy was a substitute teacher for Mesa County School District 51, but he had not been in the classroom at least two years prior to his arrest.

Eddy also is a retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army and received SWAT weapons training with the Los Angeles Police Department. He was a patrol officer with the agency from 1971 to 1978, according to the city of Los Angeles.
