July 3, 2007: Grand Junction woman remembered smiling

Friends and family of Paige Birgfeld said they’ll launch a search for the missing Grand Junction woman in a couple days if no further information surfaces on her whereabouts.
About 30 people showed up Monday night at Strawberry Acres Park to pray that Birgfeld returned before that happened.

“She’s one of those people you look at and go ‘Wow, why can’t I be like that?’ ” said Maggie Lahue, a friend of Birgfeld. “She was so full of smiles. She was so good at looking at the positive things in life.”

Participants signed colorful, big cards wishing for her safe return and prayed over lighted candles as the sun set.

Birgfeld’s father, Frank Birgfeld, said Paige has a lot of spark and described her entrepreneurial spirit. He said she’s been known to pick up odd jobs as a secret shopper and works hard at being good mom.

He said she was resourceful at being a single mom, but the financial burdens of paying for her home and raising children was difficult.

Birgfeld has been missing since Thursday and her burned- out car was found at a business on 25 Road on Sunday night. Police are investigating the incident.

Birgfeld, who was described as a motivated Pampered Chef consultant, earned the company’s top reward, a Caribbean vacation twice in the past two years, friends said. Birgfeld also works with preschoolers doing dance lessons, called Brain Dance.

“My 4-year-old came home just in love with Ms. Paige,” Lahue said.

Members of the Grand Junction MOMS club, in which Birgfeld was a charter member, have drawn up fliers asking people to contact authorities if she’s seen.

Club President Andrea Land said group members will prepare meals for the family, a special gesture members perform for celebrations or in times of need.

“Paige was like a ray of sunshine,” Land said. “She’s the kind of person who smiles through everything.”
