Junction cupcake baker makes TV debut
One local baker introduces her command of all things cupcake to a national audience on an upcoming episode of “Cupcake Wars.”
Pattie Dravis, owner of Pattie’s Tiny Cakes, will appear on the Food Network show at 6 p.m. Sunday in an episode entitled “Cosmic Cupcakes.”
“I like the show and thought ‘Wouldn’t it be cool if I got on that?’ ” Dravis said. “I just wanted everybody to taste my cupcakes.”
Her husband, Ken, produced her application video last fall at his Aspen Leaf Recording and Production Studio. It’s available at youtube.com/watch?v=JYKlMWP2JXE &feature.
Pattie Dravis was accepted in October 2012 and taped her episode in November.
Contractually, however, she couldn’t say much more about her appearance until the episode airs Sunday.
In fact, Dravis couldn’t tell anyone about her upcoming appearance on Food Network until recently.
“You try and keep a big secret like that,” Dravis said.
Now, friends and family — other than a select few who also signed confidentiality contracts — know Dravis is a serious cupcake competitor, despite not being a longtime cupcake businesswoman.
Dravis has baked her whole life but only started her business about two years ago after retiring from her 25-year career as a flight attendant.
“I love to bake,” she said.
She opened Pattie’s Tiny Cakes, pattiestinycakes.com, in her Grand Junction home. Word slowly spread about her flavor combinations and homemade frosting.
After a little more than a year in business, Dravis applied to “Cupcake Wars.”
The Food Network show is a reality-based competition pitting four bakers against one another in challenges centered on making the tastiest, most creative cupcakes for a three-person judging panel.
One contestant is eliminated after each round until the eventual winner is crowned with $10,000 and the opportunity to showcase his or her cupcakes at a prestigious event.
Dravis credited her sister for summarizing the experience best.
When the women look back on the hours they spent practicing and the time they spent in the “Cupcake Wars” kitchen, they’ll say, ” ‘Oh, I can’t believe we did that’ instead of ‘Oh, I wish I had done that,’ ” Dravis said.
Dravis’ episode will re-air at 1 a.m. May 20 and 11 a.m. May 25 on the Food Network.
