Junction man dies in rollover

A police officer investigates a Monday morning rollover on 27 1/2 Road, in which the driver, 42-year-old Mark Ortiz of Grand Junction, died. The road was closed for more than three hours.

One person died in a single-vehicle rollover crash Monday morning on 27 1/2 Road, according to the Grand Junction Police Department.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office identified the driver as Mark Ortiz, a 42-year-old male resident of Grand Junction.

The office said Ortiz had “a natural disease process” that rendered him unable to control the vehicle he was driving. The office did not identify the disease.

Shortly after 7 a.m., Ortiz was driving a sport-utility vehicle south on 27 1/2 Road, hit a curb, then swerved to the other side of the road and struck some trees, causing the SUV to roll on its side, police said.

No other occupants were inside,  and no other vehicles were involved.

Officers were at the scene along 27 1/2 Road, between Ridge Drive and Cortland, investigating the crash before finally opening the road at 10:20 a.m., police said.

Grand Junction police used a laser mapping system to help determine the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
