Junction man suspected of bribery, assault

Richard Norton Jr.

A Grand Junction man is staring down a felony charge of bribery after telling police he would pay them off as long as they didn’t jail his female partner.

Deputies early Saturday morning were called to the home of 26-year-old Richard Ronald Norton Jr., 3109 Mountain Brook Drive, in response to a fight.

According to an arrest affidavit, Norton told deputies he was drunk after going out to the bars and he got into a fight with a woman who also lived at the home when he returned.

The woman’s name is redacted from the affidavit. Norton said the woman started calling him names and talking about his dead mother, so he locked her out of the house.

Norton said he then unlocked the door and let the woman back in, and she proceeded to hit his face. He said she took a snow shovel to his truck and then used the shovel to smash the windshield out of her own car.

When deputies asked why she would smash the window of her own car, Norton told police “she was crazy.”

“I’ll bribe you or whatever I have to do, just don’t take her to jail,” Norton told deputies, according to the affidavit.

The woman told police Norton had called her names, threw her clothes outside and injured her when he picked her up and fell with her over his shoulder. The woman told police she saw Norton standing on the hood of her car and stomping on her windshield.

The woman said she got upset and used a snow shovel to strike Norton’s truck, the affidavit said.

Deputies arrived to see Norton slam the woman’s foot in a door and smash her windshield and hear him yelling at her, the affidavit said. Norton made threats to law enforcement and attempted, in vain, to kick out the back window of the patrol car.

Staff at Mesa County Jail were called to help remove Norton from the patrol car.

Norton was booked into jail Saturday on suspicion of felony bribery and misdemeanor   third-degree assault, criminal mischief and harassment.
