Junction man with sword accused in assault

A Mesa County Sheriff’s Department deputy used a Taser to subdue a man brandishing a Samurai sword after the man allegedly choked another person, according to an arrest affidavit.

Christopher Michael Bell, 24, 263 E. Hanover Circle, was booked on suspicion of felony menacing and third-degree assault, after deputies were called on a reported assault at his home around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Bell’s arrest affidavit said deputies approached the front of the home, with guns drawn, when Bell emerged from the home’s front entrance armed with a 4-foot sword. When Bell was told to drop the weapon, he replied, “I’d rather (expletive) die,” the affidavit said.

A deputy fired a Taser, hitting Bell in the waist and left leg; the Taser cycled twice, the affidavit said. Bell was handcuffed, and his injuries didn’t require treatment at a hospital, the affidavit said.

A resident at Bell’s home told a deputy that Bell had been drinking and tends to get violent when he’s drunk. Bell became upset over a years-old incident involving a computer, the resident said.

Bell allegedly choked another man in the hallway of the home until the man escaped. Bell then retrieved a Samurai sword, telling another person, “I’m going to kill you,” the affidavit said.

Bell is scheduled for a bond hearing today.
