Juvenile held in death of sex assault suspect with GJ ties

COLORADO SPRINGS — Colorado Springs police have arrested a juvenile on charges of killing a man who was accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl.
Police say the arrest came Monday, but they refused to release the juvenile’s name, age or gender, or say whether the slaying was connected to the sexual assault case.
The juvenile was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in the June shooting of 43-year-old Jon Hazard, a truck driver who had residences in Colorado Springs and Grand Junction. Hazard was scheduled to go on trial days later in Colorado Springs on charges of child sexual assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Hazard was arrested in December. An arrest warrant affidavit accused him of sexually assaulting the girl at least twice in 2008.
The Colorado Springs Gazette has reported that the girl sent Hazard nude pictures of herself by cell phone, and Hazard took photos of her in a motel room.
The sexual assault allegations came to light after the girl reportedly went with Hazard to Grand Junction, where she was found by her mother.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department in June told The Daily Sentinel deputies took a report in July 2008 of a possible sex offense involving Hazard and a juvenile girl. The report was filed by a woman in Colorado Springs. The case was transferred to the Grand Junction Police Department.
Police spokeswoman Kate Porras said Colorado Springs detectives asked for assistance in an investigation involving Hazard, but declined to elaborate.
Colorado Springs police declined to discuss the case’s ties to Grand Junction.
