KAFM fires executive director

It is a season of change at KAFM Community Radio.

Executive Director Marc Foster was fired after nearly one year in charge of the local station, 88.1 FM.

The radio station’s board of directors made the decision after a lengthy discussion, Vice President Barry Barak said.

“Our position is that it was in the best interest of the station,” said Barak, who did not elaborate as to specific reasons for the decision.

Barak thanked Foster for serving the station but said the decision is one “everyone” on the seven-person KAFM board stands behind.

“The decision wasn’t made lightly, but it’s in the best interest of the station at this time,” board President Claudia McClintock Ragar said.

Foster didn’t return a call seeking comment Monday.

Barak said the board plans to appoint an interim executive director as soon as it can, then conduct a search for someone to fill the permanent post.

KAFM officials have to move on because the station is scheduled to jump from 16 watts to 300 watts today.

The increase was slated for last week, but the Front Range man in charge of the new antenna installation was injured in an unrelated incident and had to postpone his visit, said Barak, who also headed the fundraising campaign to increase the wattage.

The wattage boost will improve KAFM’s signal in the Grand Junction area and increase the area where the station is available.

A celebration party for the increased wattage, in conjunction with the annual holiday open house, is 5:30-7:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at the station’s Radio Room, 1310 Ute Ave.

People with questions about the wattage increase or the open house can email Ragar at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
