Kannah Creek celebrates beer week
Calling all beer lovers. The time has come to celebrate beer, and what better way than to dedicate a whole week to it.
Kannah Creek Brewing Company, located at 1960 N. 12th St., is hosting Western Colorado’s first Colorado Craft Beer Week, starting March 18, to celebrate Colorado’s craft beer culture. Different events will be take place throughout the week, including a specialty beer tasting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 24.
The specialty tasting will feature 15 Western Slope breweries, each sharing five gallons of their unique reserve beer, giving beer lovers a chance to taste the best beer Western Colorado has to offer. A $10 fee will give customers access to the specialty beer, with all proceeds benefiting the Colorado Brewer’s Guild.
“Colorado is the leading beer state and we have probably the best brewer’s guild in the nation,” said Matt Simpson, a Kannah Creek brewer. “Beer Week is a fun thing to do and is a great way for us to get together with friends to enjoy beer.”
Kannah Creek will kick off Beer Week on Monday at 5 p.m. with a keg of Dirty Blonde beer. Kannah Creek’s brewers will be tapping the beer from a firkin keg. The beer is put in a sealed cask, or firkin, before fermentation is complete to naturally carbonate the beer. The firkin Dirty Blonde will only be available Monday night.
The idea for Sunday’s specialty tasting started when Simpson and another Kannah Creek brewer, Emma Faulkner, met with Danny Wilson from Palisade Brewing Company and Zorba Proteau from Rockslide Restaurant and Brewery to discuss the perfect way to kick off beer season.
“We all thought it would be cool to kick off the beer festival season with a special reserve tasting,” said Simpson. “With Colorado Craft Beer Week right around the corner the timing could not have been better.”
The Colorado Brewer’s Guild, a non-profit trade association that promotes the Colorado craft brewing industry, is in charge of organizing and growing Colorado Craft Beer Week. According to Steve Kurowski, marketing and public affairs director for the CBG, most Beer Week events are happening in Denver, but the CBG saw an opportunity to produce a world-class beer week for beer lovers all over Colorado and here on the Western Slope.
“Beer culture is a huge part of Colorado and our brewers kept talking to other breweries around Western Colorado and it has turned in to a big event with the 15 different breweries participating,” said Katlin Lubeley, marketing and advertising director for Kannah Creek.
With a variety of tappings, tastings and other drinking festivities planned, Kannah Creek is bolstering up for a busy week.
“We’re hoping this will be a huge event that gets everyone involved,” said Lubeley. “We’re excited.”
Kannah Creek will be featuring a brown ale aged six months and their Buffalo Trace Bourbon on Sunday.
The participating breweries include Kannah Creek Brewing Company, Rockslide Restaurant and Brewery, Palisade Brewing Company, Copper Club Brewing Company, Colorado Boy Pub and Brewery, Horsefly Brewing Company, Two Rascals Brewing Company, Suds Bros. Brewery, Ouray Brewery, Aspen Brewing Company, Carbondale Beer Works, Revolution Brewing, Telluride Brewing Company, Glenwood Canyon Brewing Company and Rifle Brewing Company.
