Keep West Slope whole
One of the first thoughts we had on seeing the maps of Colorado’s seven congressional districts was that Senate Democrats must be having a pretty good giggle.
What better way to make heads on both sides of the Continental Divide explode than to put Grand Junction and Boulder into the same congressional district. Putting Grand Junction in the 2nd Congressional District, however, is no joke.
The last time the West Slope was bisected east to west was in the 1970s and the deed was done maliciously by Republicans who aimed to torpedo U.S. Rep. Wayne Aspinall, D-Colo., then the chairman of the Committee on Insular and Interior Affairs.
The Republicans succeeded and the West Slope has yet to recover from that “success,” under representation from either party.
If Senate Democrats want to be better remembered, they’d do well to keep the West Slope whole.
