Kids Voting celebration banquet set for tonight

Kids Voting Mesa County will host its eighth-annual Civics Celebration Banquet from 6 to 8 p.m. today in the Colorado Mesa University Center Ballroom.

The theme for this year’s event is “Students Have Voices.” Tickets are $50. Anyone interested in a last-minute ticket or interested in making a donation to Kids Voting can contact Executive Director Martha Graf at 245-3414.

Kids Voting Mesa County provides civics lessons and mock voting opportunities for public, private and home-schooled students in Collbran, De Beque, Fruita, Gateway, Grand Junction and Palisade.

The banquet program includes music by the Fruita Monument High School String Quintet and Colorado Mesa University vocal music student Paige Burckert and a presentation of colors by Collbran Job Corps students.

Seventeen groups of students who were nominated by teachers or parents will be honored for their volunteer work. Six groups in particular will speak about their efforts, which range from playing music at nursing homes and helping Hurricane Sandy victims to selling bracelets to buy playground equipment and organizing a nonprofit organization that helps low-income students pay for sports uniforms, equipment and fees so they can participate in District 51 athletics.

Individual honorees are: Mikayla Braden, Josh Coniff, Emily Costanza, Davin Devillier, Allison Digby – Quiet Help for a Friend in Need; Tyler Fair, Emily Kesterson and Phoebe Stoye.

Groups being honored are Central High School’s Holiday Heroes; Fruita Monument’s Composting Commit-Tea and Play Back Sports nonprofit; Mesa View Elementary’s Sit, Play Talk Club; Mount Garfield Middle School’s Wolf Pack 1 and 2; second-graders at Taylor Elementary School; and the student councils of Rocky Mountain Elementary and Shelledy Elementary School.
