Every teacher is a language teacher; every class is a language class.
It’s better to be kind than to be right.

Cynthia Valdez, a teacher at Palisade High School, signs off her e-mails with the observations above. Valdez was among those School District #51 educators who recently received thanks from students or former students for helping them understand academic skills such as English and life skills such as kindness. In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week May 2-5, a selection of student letters appears online each weekday through Friday.

Dear Mrs. Valdez,

Thank you very much for always helping me with my classes, which will someday lead me to a good future. I appreciate all you have done for me these past two years that I have been attending Palisade High School.

My classmates and I all thank you for doing so much for us, even when you’re the one who takes the blame for our mistakes. At times you can be mean and grouchy, but overall you are a very nice, caring and helpful teacher, who does things for the best of your students.

Once more, I thank you for your advice and support.

Sincerely,
Osbaldo Medina

Dear Mr. Schwarz,

I would like to thank you for being the teacher that really helped me understand science. I have had a lot of trouble with science and you helped me with all the things I did not understand.

You have also given me a lot of chances to get things done. Just recently I bombed a test 14/31, and I talked during that test so I could not make it up. But you said if I would like to I could make it up and now I have a B in your science class.

So, thank you, Mr. Schwarz, for being a great science teacher and a huge help!

Dear Kate McPhail,

For a while now I have thought about what you have taught me five years ago,

I remember when you would always tell me to “try again over and over” when I would try to give up. From that one little thing you have taught me, you have inspired me with your knowledge on never giving up. Another thing you have taught me was spelling.

You also have been a good role model by caring about others. These are some of the reasons that you, Kate McPhail, are an inspiration to me!

Sincerely,
Jackie Abeyta

Dear Mr. Ruzin,

Hello. I just wanted to thank you for your help during school and being a great teacher! You have been an exquisite role model to me. I am thankful for all of the things you have taught me, showed me and explained to me! You are a wonderful person!

I’m also very thankful for the day I was worried about school, golf and my health; you let me into your class and took care of me.

You are one of the most important people in my life now. I think of you as my second grandpa. We share everything together, talk about anything. When I am down and sad, I know I can come to you for help!

You’re not just a teacher to me any more, but a family member and a great friend!

Sincerely,
Alexis Schulte

Dear Mrs. Lybarger,

In sixth, seventh and eighth grades you had a big impact on me. You really helped me through some big problems, and I will always remember you for how much you changed my life.

I really appreciate how I could talk to you about anything; you were like a second mom to me. I could never say thank you enough times; I hope I can repay you in some way.

Sincerely,
Zach Crespin

Dear Mr. Davis,

I just wanted to say that you are my all-time favorite teacher! I miss you so much. I miss being in your class and having you as my band director. Band is not the same without you.

I loved seeing you driving all of us to honor jazz band in the small mini-van! Thinking of your pink Converse still brings a smile to my face. I truly think that our jazz band was one big family!

You are truly an amazing teacher and friend. You are so kind-hearted, and I just want you to know how much I appreciate all you have done for me. Oh, sorry for breaking your whiteboard.

Sincerely,
Jaqlyn Monger

Dear Mrs. Popick and Mrs. Norell,

Thank you for doing what you have done for the boys’ golf team this year. You have brought the team closer and closer to being regional and state champions in the town and high school of Palisade. I feel like the team next year will be fighting for the varsity each and every tournament that we will go to.

When we see you, we try to work harder to impress you. I know I do.

We will need to work harder to fill those varsity spots each and every tournament this next season. The golf team next year will be like a dream team.

Sincerely,
Chance Jackson
