Let new council fill seat
We have nothing but respect for Bruce Hill and Gregg Palmer, two outgoing Grand Junction City Council members who have served this city admirably for eight years.
But we disagree with them and other members of the council that one of their last acts on the council should be selecting someone to fill the vacancy in Council District D left by Bonnie Beckstein, who resigned earlier this month.
As Daily Sentinel columnist and former City Councilman Jim Spehar noted this week, it is the two people replacing Hill and Palmer on the council — Bennett Boeschenstein and Jim Doody — along with the four others already on the council, who will have to work the next two years with Beckstein’s replacement.
Neither Boeschenstein nor Doody is a raw rookie regarding city government. It’s not like either one faces a steep learning curve to understand the City Council and its responsibilities. So it makes sense that those two should participate in the vote for Beckstein’s replacement, not just be consulted, as Palmer has suggested.
