Lions each get $100 bill for random act of kindness

The Grand Junction Lions Club kicked off their Random Acts of Kindness project Tuesday, in which the members are given $100 to donate to people or causes in need.

Members of the Grand Junction Lions Club were each handed a $100 bill Tuesday with instructions to use the money on some sort of random act of kindness this holiday season.

Some pooled their money with other members and made large donations to area organizations, while others preferred to give the money as a more personal gift to a deserving individual or family.

Lions Club member Keith Mumby addressed the members of the club who may have been undecided about whom to give their money and asked them to help donate to Mesa County Partners.

The money, he said, would be used to help pay for the new Western Colorado Conservation Corps building and the program in which 165 kids currently are helping to build nature trails in the Grand Valley.

Lions Tillie Bishop, Jim Dyer, Hurst Otto, Frank Spiecker, Dave Meyer, Bill Petty and Carrie Brouillette were happy to give Mumby their money. Bishop and Mumby immediately drove to the Partners’ office after the luncheon to make an $800 donation.

Dr. Pat Moran already had selected the recipient for his money. Moran said he was going to gift it to a woman that works in housekeeping at St. Mary’s Hospital.

“She’s a hard-working woman,” he said.

Lion Roger Walt contacted Tope Elementary School and asked for help selecting a needy family for his money, which he matched dollar for dollar out of his own pocket.

“They just need some extra help, and they’re very appreciative of it,” he said.

After the meeting, member Sean Hazelhurst was busy recruiting others to pool their money and go shopping for new toys to be given to the Salvation Army’s Toy Drive.

Other undecided members said they would hang on to the bill until the right recipient came along.

“Sometimes God just tells you who to give it to,” one of the members said.
