List of Veterans Day events

Veterans Affairs Hospital Medical Center staff will combine forces with The Wild West Falcons car club from 9—11 a.m. today (Saturday) to present a combination car show and drive through flu shot clinic.

While the free flu shots are for veterans only, the car show is open to the public. Veterans do not have to be enrolled with the Grand Junction VA Medical Center to receive the flu vaccine, but do have to provide proof of military service.

About 15 Falcon and Mustang automobiles will be on site for viewing in the facility’s main parking lot.

Veterans Day Parade, 2 p.m. today, traveling from Eighth Street to Third Street, on Main Street, marching bands, active duty military and more, to enter the parade call 245-6454, or meet in the R5 parking lot.

A memorial bench will be placed and dedicated to a long-time volunteer, who died earlier this year, at the Grand Junction Veterans Affairs Medical Center on Sunday at 2 p.m.

The bench is being donated by the local Masonic Lodge in appreciation for the more than 25 years and 25,000 hours Warren Nye gave to Western Slope veterans.

The Masons chose Veterans Day because it will allow them to dedicate the bench on a day where one of Nye’s favorite things, the facility’s Avenue of Flags, will be on display. The Avenue of Flags consists of five armed service flags, 50 state flags and nearly 75 U.S. flags.

Local Boy Scouts put the flags up 7 a.m. and bring them in at 4 p.m. on Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day and the Fourth of July.

The ceremony is open to the public.

 

Hilltop’s Senior Living Communities to hold Veterans Day Flag Ceremonies at The Commons and The Fountains The Commons and The Fountains of Hilltop will each hold a Veterans Day Ceremony to honor all veterans, including several residents and employees. The public and members of the media are invited to attend on Sunday. The Commons ceremony will be held in The Garden Room at 1 p.m. and will be followed by a refreshment reception. The ceremony at The Fountains will commence at 2:30 p.m. in Juniper Lounge. The Commons and The Fountains each have traditional table displays honoring America’s Prisoner’s of War and Missing in Action. These displays can be found in the lobby of each building.

 

The Historic Avalon Theater, 645 Main St., will offer to area veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces, free admission to the movies on Sunday, Veterans Day.

The movie “Arbitrage,” starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon, will be shown at 3:30 and 5:40 p.m. Admission is $5 for the general public.

 

The Grand Junction area Supercuts salons will offer free haircuts for veterans and active military personnel on Sunday, Veterans Day.

Take your military ID or proof of previous service to a Supercuts salon at 2740 U.S. Highway 50 on Orchard Mesa, the Colorado Mesa University salon, at 964 North Ave., or 3235 Interstate 70 Business Loop in Clifton.

The salon hours on Sundays are 10 a.m.—6 p.m.

 

On Sunday, Fleet Reserve Organization will host a Wreath Ceremony at the Blue Heron Boat Ramp at 9 a.m. off the Redlands Parkway.

Veterans Day Ceremony, Western Slope Vietnam War Memorial Park in Fruita at 11 a.m.

VFW Post 3981 State Color Guard will be conducting a Flag Retirement at the Commons at 1 p.m. at Hilltop.

Home Depot: The Home Depot is offering all active duty personnel, reservists, retired military, veterans and their families a 10 percent discount off their purchases in honor of Veteran’s Day. The offer is valid on purchases of up to $2,000 for a maximum of $200 and is available at The Home Depot stores, The Home Depot Design Center locations, Yardbirds and EXPO Design Center locations. The 10% discount is available everyday for active duty and retirees, but not all veterans. 244-8577

Lowes: Lowe’s Companies, Inc. will offer all active, reserve, honorably discharged, retired military personnel and their immediate family members a 10 percent discount on in-store U.S. purchases made during the Veterans Day holiday. The discount is available Veterans Day weekend. The discount is available on in-stock and special order purchases up to $5,000. To qualify, individuals must present a valid military ID or other proof of service. Excluded from the discount are sales via Lowes.com, previous sales, and purchases of services or gift cards. Lowes offers this discount daily to active duty military members, but not to veterans. However, they extend the offer to military veterans on military holidays. 683-4760

Fee Free Day at National Parks. To honor America’s service men and women, areas managed by the National Park Service will not charge entrance fees for Veteran’s Day weekend – November 10-12, 2012. Over 100 national Parks will be participating in this event. 858-3617

Bed and Breakfast for Vets. B&Bs for Vets has organized over 485 participating Bed and Breakfasts and Inns across the U.S. and Canada which will be offering veterans a free night’s stay on Veteran’s Day weekend. This offer is available to both active duty military members and veterans with ID, but space is limited. Free Hugo® Canes for Veterans. Sam’s Club locations nationwide will distribute Hugo canes free of charge on Veterans Day weekend to U.S. military veterans in need of mobility assistance.
