Local scout cleans desert for service project

Zane Rosenkrance, 14, will be conducting a cleanup of 36 acres desert land near Fruita as his Eagle Scout Project this weekend.

Thirty-six acres of land scattered with trash caught the attention of a local Boy Scout.

Zane Rosenkrance of Grand Junction knew the land needed maintenance. In fact, he designated the desert cleanup as part of his Eagle Scout Project. The project’s completion was one of the few things that separated Rosenkrance from attaining the coveted Eagle rank.

Rosenkrance said the area, which is near 16 Road, is a frequently used space that deserved to be cleaned up.

“I thought if I picked it up, people would respect it and leave it cleaner than it is now,” Rosenkrance said.

Rosenkrance said the project is the first of many steps in becoming an Eagle Scout.

There are a number of things that a scout must do to become an Eagle Scout. The candidate must complete an Eagle Scout Project, earn a total of 21 merit badges, attend a Scoutmaster conference, complete the Eagle Scout board of review and have an active membership of least six months.

Rosenkrance said that becoming an Eagle Scout was just the next step for him. He said he became a Cub Scout at age eight and moved on to Boy Scouts at age 12. Now, Rosenkrance, 14, hopes to attain the prestige of Eagle rank.

So far, Rosenkrance has spent 10 hours planning and organizing to make his service project a success. Over the weekend, he will spend about another 10 hours volunteering.

Rosenkrance said that about 12 kids from his troop would volunteer at the site over the weekend. He hoped for a good turnout from the community as well.

“I’ve learned mostly leadership and organizational skills from being in various leadership positions within the troop and on campouts,” Rosenkrance said.

Volunteers are needed to help with the cleanup of the public land near Loma on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Those interested in helping should bring their own tools and a lunch to the grounds. Water and a portable toilet will be on site.

Take US Highway 6 West, past Fruita, and take a right on 16 Road. The site will be 6.6 miles down the road, off to the left.
