Local designer competing on ‘Project Runway’
“Is this really happening, really?” Grand Junction resident Julie Tierney asked the casting director with “Project Runway,” who’d called to tell her she was going to New York.
Tierney, 35, was chosen recently as a cast member for Season 9 of the show after completing a lengthy application process.
“Project Runway” stars super model Heidi Klum along with fashion guru Tim Gun. The reality show has contestants competing in timed events against each other to design and create the best garments. Contestants are judged and eliminated on a weekly basis.
Tierney has worked at Loki in Grand Junction for about 10 months, where she is a graphic designer, putting together catalogs and anything graphic, Loki associate Paul Bailey said.
“She was talking about it one day and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I get in?’ ” Bailey said.
Tierney has been in New York City three or four weeks, Bailey said. She has to sign a confidentiality form, so she hasn’t been able to talk much about the show, he added.
The video from Tierney’s casting session features her showing a number of her outdoor-wear designs to three judges, one who praises her fashion sense.
“I love this! This is a runway show ... your personal style combined with the Southwest all makes sense in a fashion statement,” the judge said.
Season 9 of the show premieres at 8 p.m. July 28 on Lifetime.
