Local firms retained at Cameo plant

Two Grand Junction companies and three Denver-based firms will to do much of the decommissioning of the aging Cameo power plant in De Beque Canyon, Xcel is expected to announce today.

The official announcement that the three Denver companies — Gilmore Construction Co., Hudspeth & Associates, and Ontario Specialty Corp. — will be awarded the $5 million contract to decommission the 50-year-old facility won’t come until this morning. A draft news release obtained by The Daily Sentinel said many subcontracts will go to local companies.

Additionally, Xcel is to announce Walsh Environmental, 535 Grand Ave., and Summit Energy Services, 783 Valley Court, will be hired to manage the project. Exactly what work they will do, what they will be paid and how many workers they will devote to the project is to be determined.
