Locals stand up to be counted

Imagine that. In Mesa County, noted for its antipathy toward big government and assorted far-right ideologues, response to this year’s Census is running ahead of the response rate in other parts of Colorado and around the country.

With a 63 percent response rate, Mesa County is only slightly ahead of the state and national rate of 60 percent.

Still, it’s worth noting when some politicians of the right fringe have said they’re worried the information being gathered by the Census Bureau will be used for nefarious political purposes.

And Mesa County’s response rate is well ahead of the response rates in some conservative states. According to Census Bureau figures from Tuesday, only about 54 percent of households in Texas and 53 percent in Alabama have returned their forms so far.

We’re glad to see Mesa County residents are willing to stand up and be counted. It means a great deal for our future political representation and how government money is spent.
