Lost plate leads cops to accused drunk driver, 16

A vehicle’s license plate, left at the scene of an accident, led law enforcement to arrest a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of DUI early Wednesday morning, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

At 1:48 a.m. Wednesday, State Patrol dispatchers received a call regarding a hit-and-run accident in which a vehicle had crashed into a highway information sign at 3219 Interstate 70 Business Loop.

Besides the sign, a license plate was lying in the intersection, troopers said. Local law enforcement, in cooperation with the State Patrol, traced the plate. At 2:54 a.m., cops found the vehicle parked at its registered residence.

The vehicle showed signs it had been in a recent accident, and the 16-year-old was asleep behind the wheel, troopers said.
