Man accused of molesting teen

Robert Zimmerman

A Pear Park man was arrested Thursday on allegations he repeatedly molested a teenage girl.

Robert Lynn Zimmerman, 55, 3064 Canyon Land Drive, was arrested on suspicion of 20 charges including sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s Department opened an investigation in July after the 14-year-old girl came forward and reported to a local school official that Zimmerman had touched her breasts and buttocks on several occasions, according to an arrest affidavit.

The girl reported Zimmerman was intoxicated during most of the incidents, the affidavit said.

A Sheriff’s Department investigator noted Zimmerman smelled of alcohol when he showed up at the Sheriff’s Department to be interviewed in the investigation.

Zimmerman said he “might have bounced off” the girl while walking past her, but insisted he never purposefully touched her.

During an initial court appearance on Thursday, he was ordered held at the Mesa County Jail on $50,000 bond and ordered to have no contact with children under age 18.

Zimmerman was ordered to be fitted with a Global Positioning System ankle monitor should he post bond.
