Man accused of sex assault on child shoots self
A traffic stop in a Montrose strip mall ended in death Monday when a man suspected of felony sex assault on a child shot himself in front of officers after refusing to leave his car, said Gene Lillard, Montrose Police Department police commander.
Stephen J. Micenec, 48, of Cimarron, reportedly shot himself around 3 p.m. in the parking lot of a shopping mall located at Townsend Avenue and Odelle Road after being pulled over by Montrose County sheriff’s deputies.
Deputies knew Micenec was wanted on a felony warrant out of Grand Junction and recognized the vehicle as his, the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies allegedly ordered Micenec out of the car and called for backup, but he refused to exit the vehicle. Shortly after Montrose police officers responded to the scene, the man shot himself, Lillard said. Officers did not discharge their weapons.
Micenec was pronounced dead a short time later at Montrose Memorial Hospital. A report on the cause of death is pending with the Montrose County Coroner’s Office.
“This was a tragic incident and our condolences go out to the family,” Lillard said.
Micenec was accused of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust in an arrest warrant prepared by the Grand Junction Police Department.
A friend of the child victim’s family, Micenec was allegedly left alone with the child on several occasions and slept with the child in the child’s bed, according to a police affidavit. Micenic was accused of inappropriately touching the victim several times during a one-year period that started in October 2014, according to the affidavit.
