Man charged in shoplifting was nabbed at Two Rivers
A man who allegedly filled his backpack and pants pockets with items without paying for them at a downtown Grand Junction store was eventually caught after burglarizing another business, according to court records.
Caleb Hovland, 21, was ordered jailed on $10,000 bond following his arrest Thursday afternoon on suspicion of misdemeanor theft and first-degree burglary with a weapon.
An arrest affidavit in Hovland’s case says while Grand Junction police officers were responding to a report of a shoplifter wearing a black backpack fleeing City Market, 200 Rood Ave., dispatchers relayed information the suspect was headed toward the underground parking garage of Two Rivers Convention Center, 159 Main St.
Staff at the convention center said a man broke through double doors on an underground storage area.
Hovland was found hiding behind several folded tables and arrested. A black backpack he had contained vitamins, playing cards, a package of lighters, condoms, multiple 20-ounce bottles of Pepsi, two GPS units and a loaded .22 caliber revolver inside a leather holster, according to the affidavit.
Aside from the gun, Hovland was allegedly captured on City Market surveillance video taking the items later found in his backpack, the affidavit said.
Hovland’s statement to police was removed in the version of the affidavit.
