Man dead, 2nd hurt badly after wreck of car near Fruita

One man was killed and another critically injured after they were thrown from a vehicle when it crashed early Saturday in the Fruita area.

The men, who were not identified, were the only two people involved in the single-vehicle crash at the intersection of 17 1/4 and K 3/4 Roads, according to a Colorado State Patrol release.

It was not clear whether the man killed was driving. The injured man was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital.

Shortly after midnight, the 1997 white Ford Mustang drove through the intersection and off the road,  crashing into a number of “fixed objects before coming to a rest” and catching on fire, the CSP said in the release.

The intersection was closed for several hours.
