Man drowns near Palisade

A man has died of an apparent drowning on the Colorado River near the eastern edge of Palisade this afternoon.

Emergency responders reacted to a radio call around 3:20 p.m., seeking access to an address along River Road. Just upstream is a popular river access area, near where Interstate 70 veers north into De Beque Canyon.

The man — who witnesses said was not wearing a life jacket — was apparently pulled from the water unconscious and not breathing, according to radio traffic soon after the initial emergency call.
