Man fatally shoots self at Glenwood hospital

A man died when he apparently shot himself inside a public restroom at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs Monday, police say.

Glenwood Springs Police Chief Terry Wilson said the man isn’t believed to have been a patient or employee at the hospital.

“We could find no relationship between this individual and the hospital,” he said.

However, the man apparently went to the hospital with the intent of killing himself, Wilson said.

“Why is completely unknown,” Wilson said.

He said there was no suicide note, and investigators had not had the chance to talk to the man’s family about his state of mind prior to the shooting.

The Garfield County Coroner’s Office had not released the man’s name Monday. Wilson said he lived in the area.

The shooting occurred in a restroom near the hospital’s emergency department.

Wilson said no one heard the shooting. He said someone had tried to enter the restroom and found it locked from inside around 11:30 a.m., and hospital personnel then gained access and found the dead victim inside a stall.

The incident resulted in the temporary closure of part of a hallway but otherwise did not interrupt services at Valley View Monday.

In a statement, the hospital said the security of staff, patients and visitors was not jeopardized.
