Man fatally shot in Palisade
No suspects are in custody as Sheriff's Office investigates
Few details were available Monday about a death being investigated as a homicide that took place late Sunday night in the 3600 block of G 7/10 Road in Palisade.
What is known is that a 56-year-old man was found unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound to the chest about 11:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s Office spokesman Gerald Wohlge said Monday that he doesn’t believe there is a risk to public safety associated with the incident although, as of late Monday, no suspects were in custody.
“They’re interviewing multiple people, some are suspects and some are just neighbors, and it’s still very early and active for us,” Wohlge said. “If there were a public safety risk, I think (investigators) would have been a whole lot more forthcoming in letting that (information) come out early.”
Unconfirmed scanner reports, from Broadcastify.com, indicate that the person who called 911 told dispatchers that he knew the victim and found him next to a bed.
Wohlge said that he did not know if there was forced entry into the residence.
Investigators have identified the victim, he said, but are not yet releasing his name.
Wohlge said authorities hoped today to publicly identify the victim and release cause and manner of death in the case.
According to the Mesa County Assessor’s Office, the property where the shooting took place is owned by Bethel Davis. Reached Monday, Davis said she was “not at liberty to talk about” the shooting.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call non-emergency dispatch at 242-6707 or Mesa County Crime Stoppers at 241-7867.
