Man free on bond after child is run over
A 50-year-old Grand Junction man was arrested Saturday night at his Orchard Mesa home for allegedly running over a 1-year-old girl in his driveway.
Anthony Lawrence Woods, of 2799 Unaweep Ave., was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault, DUI and careless driving causing injury, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Woods was released from Mesa County Jail on a $3,000 bond.
Alcohol is believed to have contributed to the incident.
The State Patrol is still investigating but has not yet identified the child.
Her condition also was unknown Sunday.
On Saturday night, the toddler was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital reportedly unconscious and not breathing, according to police scanner traffic.
Cpl. Ryan Parker of the State Patrol said Saturday night that he believed Woods was the toddler’s grandfather.
Woods owns the Orchard Mesa home, according to the Mesa County Assessor’s Web site.
At 6:55 p.m. Saturday, the State Patrol responded to 2799 Unaweep Ave. after Woods backed a 1982 Jeep Cherokee Laredo out of an enclosed garage and ran over the 1-year-old girl, according to a release from the State Patrol.
Parker said a group of adults was working on the vehicle in a detached garage.
Parker added that three other adults, including the girl’s mother, were present when the accident happened.
