Man held in sex act on a child
A Grand Junction man was arrested Thursday on allegations he sexually assaulted a young girl in September.
Jose Gonzalez Tavera, 35, 225 S. 13th St., was arrested on a Grand Junction Police Department warrant alleging sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, sexual assault on a child and unlawful sexual contact.
Police opened an investigation Sept. 10, which was the day after Tavera’s alleged victim reported he assaulted her, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.
“She said it was horrifying and disgustingly gross,” the affidavit said.
“Jose told her to not tell anybody and he would never do it again.”
The girl reported the alleged encounter to her mother on Sept. 10, who called police that same day.
Police removed many details about the case in a heavily redacted document that was released to The Daily Sentinel.
Interviewed by police on Sept. 26, Tavera denied assaulting the girl.
“Jose said he loves spending time with his kids every chance he gets,” the affidavit said. “Jose said this is killing him, because he thinks this is putting him in a position to lose his kids.”
The alleged victim is not related to Tavera.
He’s being held at the Mesa County Jail on $100,000 bond.
