Man jailed as suspect in fatal shooting
A 29-year-old Clifton man has been arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with a Saturday night shooting that resulted in a woman’s death, according to the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.
Aleksandr Kolpakov, of 3296½ Lombardy Lane, Unit 3 in Clifton, is being held without bond pending his arraignment today, said Mesa County Sheriff’s Sgt. Henry Stoffel.
The woman, whose identity and age have not yet been confirmed by official sources, was found dead at the address Saturday night after law enforcement received reports of shots fired at 9:41 p.m., according to earlier reports.
Stoffel said no other suspects are believed to be involved, and law enforcement doesn’t believe there are any other victims in the case.
Records detailing the investigation so far have been sealed, and Stoffel said he didn’t know the relationship between Kolpakov and the victim.
Rich Garigen, the owner of the four-plex where the shooting occurred, said Kolpakov had been staying with the victim — his primary tenant — for the last several months. Garigen said his wife worked with the victim and described her as a “pretty caring person.”
A website for an organization called Real World Self Defense describes someone with the name Aleksandr Kolpakov as an instructor and the group’s founder. His biography describes him as Russian born with dual citizenship and as a former U.S. military service member.
