Man shot at GJ apartment complex
A man remained hospitalized Sunday evening after he was shot repeatedly in the pre-dawn hours only feet from the front door of his apartment.
The man’s would-be assailant was at-large Sunday. Grand Junction police said the victim was in his 30s but declined to identify him.
Police spokeswoman Kate Porras described the man’s injuries as “severe.”
Authorities were called about 3 a.m. to Chateau Apartments, 1300 N. 21st St., after neighbors on the complex’s third floor heard multiple shots in rapid succession.
Jennifer Study, a Fruita resident who was with her young son in a third-floor apartment, said she thought someone was “banging on the swamp cooler” when gunfire rang out.
She said she heard five or six gunshots.
Study said she looked through the peephole of her unit before hearing several people saying they needed help carrying a man down the stairs, “because they didn’t think he was going to make it.”
The man was lying on his stomach in the third-floor hallway, which was littered with shell casings, “mostly around him,” according to Study.
Long after police left the scene Sunday, a foot-long section of smeared blood remained on a wall near one apartment. Blood also stained the carpet in several pools in front of the apartment.
“I thought someone was knocking on the door,” said Candice Weist, who was up caring for her toddler son when gunfire rang out.
“We hear neighbors talking all the time, but it’s generally a pretty quiet place,” she said.
The victim’s condition at St. Mary’s Hospital couldn’t immediately be confirmed.
