Man struck by tractor, killed near New Castle
An Ohio man was killed Monday afternoon when he was struck by a tractor on a steep and snowy private driveway south of New Castle.
Garfield County Coroner Robert Glassmire identified the victim as Terry Stout, 60, of Akron, Ohio.
The coroner’s office was called to the scene off County Road 328 (Baldy Creek Road) shortly before 5 p.m. Monday.
Glassmire said in a news release that Stout and his brother were traveling on the driveway to a residence on their ranch when their vehicle went into a ditch. Stout began walking to the residence while his brother stayed in the vehicle. At the same time, a ranch employee was driving a ranch tractor down the driveway to assist with the vehicle.
Glassmire said when the employee and Stout met on the drive, the employee couldn’t stop the tractor due to the steep grade of the driveway and snowy conditions. Stout wasn’t able to get out of the tractor’s path in time and was struck, sustaining several injuries. He was dead when emergency responders arrived.
An autopsy is scheduled for today. The cause of death is expected to be consistent with multiple blunt-force injuries, Glassmire said. He determined the death to be an accident.
