Man accused of assault at family gathering

A man was hospitalized early Saturday after being assaulted at a family gathering in Grand Junction, according to an arrest warrant affidavit

Nicholas L. Guzman, 19, 1235 Ouray Ave., was booked into the Mesa County Jail on Saturday morning on suspicion of second-degree assault causing serious bodily injury, related to an incident the night before at a local apartment complex.

Guzman was arrested at his home after Grand Junction police received a report from a 46-year-old man who accused Guzman of beating him during a family gathering at 703 N. Third St., according to the affidavit.

The man told police he was sitting on a bed, speaking with another person, when Guzman “jumped on him.”

The man accused Guzman of hitting him with his fist in the face and striking him with his elbows, the affidavit said. He didn’t remember whether he lost consciousness or how he got away, but did recall walking to his home.

The man went to Community Hospital around 4 a.m. Saturday, and a doctor signed off on paperwork indicating the man had suffered serious bodily injuries, the affidavit said.

The injuries aren’t specified in the redacted affidavit, which was provided by Grand Junction police.

A motive for the suspected assault isn’t explained in the document, nor does it explain the relationship between the two men.

Guzman was being held at the jail Sunday on $7,500 bond.
