Man accused of sexually exploiting girl
An examination of a cell phone belonging to a man being held in the Mesa County Jail on a variety of charges resulted in new allegations of sexual exploitation of a child.
Brett Burke, 19, of Whitewater, remains in the jail after Mesa County Judge Bruce Rauum set bail for him at $100,000 on Wednesday.
Mesa County District Attorney Pete Hautzinger sought high bail for Burke after noting Burke had compiled a list of “very aggravated juvenile felonies and misdemeanors” as well as allegations of other crimes since reaching adulthood at 18.
Burke was jailed June 3 and arrested again in July, but it wasn’t clear whether the second arrest occurred while Burke was already in custody.
Investigators looking at his possessions Tuesday found video on his cell phone of an underage girl apparently complying with his suggestions that she show him parts of her body, Mesa County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Lisa McCammon said.
Burke was advised Wednesday of charges of sexual exploitation of a minor and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
In all, Burke is being held on 22 counts, including those of which he was advised Wednesday.
Formal filing of charges is set for Tuesday before Mesa County District Judge Brian Flynn.
