Man buys beer at gunpoint

Grand Junction police were looking Saturday for a man who reportedly persuaded a store clerk at gunpoint to sell him beer.

The suspect paid for his 40-ounce bottle of beer and walked out of the store, police said.

Just before 9 p.m. Friday, a man brandished a silver handgun after he was asked by a clerk to show identification at All Pro Liquor, 2913 F Road, according to initial 911 reports.

After paying cash, he left and walked in the direction of the nearby Safeway store. Grand Junction officers flooded the area, searching the store and nearby Dawn Drive, but didn’t find the suspect. A man was briefly detained by officers before he was released.

Police Cpl. Suzette Freidenberger said the suspect had not been arrested as of late Saturday afternoon. He was described by authorities as Hispanic, in his 20s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, and he was last seen wearing a blue hat, blue shirt and khaki pants.
